4/24-29/2017 Al and I explore Puerto Escondido and Loreto

Nice to be in a very protected beautiful Harbor and on a solid new mooring. It didn't take Al long to recognize that  sv Compass Rose, Steve Robert's boat was moored right in front of us.   Sleep comes easily in a secure harbor after amazing sunsets.  We found Puerto Escondido Marina and offices hardly recognizable compared to the 11 years ago.  The beautiful new marina now has great laundry facilities and a great , although expensive restaurant.  They were in the process of opening a mini market but hopefully they'll have some provisioning supplies someday.  Canals and streets are laid out around the marina with lots for sale but only a couple houses are built.

A cab into to Loreto costs $50 US so we took the next couple days to work on the boat and dinghy around the harbor meeting cruisers.  John and Julie on Myla a moody 44.

We invited Steve and Shawna over for cocktails on Chez Nous for a fun evening.   The next night they invited us to dinner at Pedro's with their friends.  Six of us in a mini copper.  Pedro's is in the  resort town of Nopolo next to Loreto Bay Resort.  Antonio owns the restaurant and  the little deli next to the restaurant and the larger deli in Loreto. What a super nice friendly guy, terrific huge margaritas and very tasty food.  A fun evening.
We decided to rent a car for a few days of exploring knowing we had to re-provison and pick up Al's cousins at the airport on Sat.   We had read about the Mission at San Javier about 30 miles up in the mountains.  First inhabited by the Cochimies then visited by the Jesuit Father Francisco Maria Picccolo in 1699.  He established a chapel there that was eventually destroyed by  hostel indians.  It was rebuilt in 1671.  The current building was started in 1744 and completed in 1759.  Built of quarried stone from 20km SE of the town.  It is extremely well preserved.  Only about 225 population in the town.

Road flooded...possibly a spring near by.

Entire road fell away.  Nice new one being built.

Down-town Loreto a nice cool spot for break.
Re- provision before picking up Wally and Marilyn at the airport then back to town to get a few fresh veggies and show them around town and an early dinner on the beach.  Supper windy when we got back to the boat.
I should have taken pictures of all the bags lined up on the dock to get them into the dingy.  Fishing gear, duffle bags, grocery bags and four of us plus white caps in the harbor.  As I remember Marilyn was pretty socked by the time we got back to Chez Nous.
